The History of Bluesound/Lenbrook

Bluesound is a Canadian audio brand known for its high-performance wireless multi-room audio systems, with a particular focus on audiophile-grade streaming. The company operates as part of the Lenbrook Group, a privately held corporation headquartered in Pickering, Ontario. Founded in 1978, Lenbrook began as a distributor of consumer electronics before evolving into a brand owner, manufacturer, and global marketer of premium audio products. In addition to Bluesound, Lenbrook owns well-established audio brands NAD Electronics and PSB Speakers, both of which have roots in high-fidelity audio and a long-standing reputation among audiophiles.

Bluesound was launched in 2013 as Lenbrook’s response to the growing demand for high-resolution digital audio streaming in the home. While multi-room audio was not a new concept at the time, most solutions prioritized convenience over audio quality. Bluesound sought to fill a different niche—one that combined ease of use with sound performance aimed at discerning listeners. Leveraging Lenbrook’s in-house engineering teams and expertise from NAD and PSB, Bluesound created a platform that offered bit-perfect playback of lossless and high-resolution audio formats, including support for MQA (Master Quality Authenticated) and FLAC files.

At the core of Bluesound’s product ecosystem is the BluOS operating system, a proprietary software platform that enables wireless streaming and control across a wide range of devices. BluOS allows for multi-room playback and supports integrations with several music services and digital libraries. BluOS is also used in select NAD and DALI (another Lenbrook-affiliated brand) products, creating a consistent user experience across devices while expanding the range of compatible components.

One of Bluesound’s distinguishing features is its broad access to streaming platforms. While many streamer brands rely on third-party platforms for control and access, Bluesound’s BluOS is developed in-house and supports a wide range of music services natively, including Qobuz, TIDAL (with MQA), Deezer, Amazon Music, Spotify, and others. BluOS is also Roon Ready, offering integration with the popular music library and management software used by many audiophiles. However, BluOS has direct access to services and metadata not always found on other Roon-compatible products, giving Bluesound a unique position in terms of streaming depth and flexibility.

Bluesound’s lineup includes network players, powered speakers, wireless soundbars, and music servers like the Vault. Products such as the Node and Powernode have become staples in the audiophile streaming category, often recommended as entry points into high-resolution digital audio. These devices are compact, relatively affordable, and designed to integrate easily into existing audio systems, whether traditional stereo setups or wireless, whole-home installations.

Today, Bluesound is widely seen as a leader in the high-resolution streaming space, offering a balance of performance, value, and convenience. Its products are available in more than 100 countries, and its user base continues to grow, particularly among listeners who want high-quality digital playback without sacrificing user experience or ease of use. As streaming becomes more central to home audio, Bluesound and its parent company Lenbrook remain positioned to play a continued role in shaping the future of digital music listening.
